In general reciprocity refers to relationships . These can involve only two individuals or many more as in a village or town, a team or a school class. A balanced recip rocity is a situation involving trust on both sides, where each benefits equally from a relationship e.g. a loving couple. It could also refer to the common negative aspects of this, such as some lack of individual choice and freedom. Negative reciprocity occurs when, in one of many ways, resources are broken down. Some factors involved are accepted by society e.g. a trader needing to make a profit. As a customer I realize this and am happy because he has given me something, even at a cost. Slave labor is an example of a very negative reciprocity. These various relationships are studied by anthropologists in order to better understand society in its many forms. 3. Extended Family - this refers to all the people one is related to, however distant the relationship. It includes both blood relationships, and also those who are related by marriage or partnership with a blood relative i.e in-laws and partners. This means not just a set of parents and children, but their spouses, cousins, aunts and all the rest. A clan or tribe can , in many instance, be considered as an extended family, and all humans belong to the world wide family of humanity, both those alive and those who preceded us. Perhaps this is why I can see a face from far away and recognise family likenesses. A nuclear family refers to one couple and their offspring as an isolated unit. In many instances in modern society this nuclear family will live alone, away from other extended family members. According to Sixth Senseââ¬â¢ ( 2005) functionalists see this type of family as positive as it means that the human race is continuing. Study of both kinds of family can help with planning for such things as education, marketing, house building and economics. 4. Kinship . This is defined as a relationship by blood ( consanguinity) or adoption and generally refers to family relationships . Often in a kinship group there will be shared characteristics such as dark hair, or great height. The members of such a group may also share common ethical and moral ideas, which is why some family members find it difficult when a member joins , perhaps in marriage, with someone from a very different group who hold differing ideas. Eddie also says to Marco ââ¬Å"They got guys all over the place, Marco. I mean.â⬠A masculine guy to Eddie is a guy who protects loved ones and a man that works and keeps a family together. This says that Eddie thinks the normal masculine guys in the area will not approve or like the fact that a guy enjoys singing. Catherine also takes pleasure from the singing of Rodolfo which gets Eddie jealous making him increasingly agitated. When Eddie notices the heels that she is wearing he orders her to take them off, because they appear to him as though they would attract other men. She felt embarrassed and anger maybe displaying that she feels embarrassed, because Rodolfo was witness to Eddieââ¬â¢s orders. It also shows the protective and possessive side that Eddie has for Catherine. Jealousy is what makes Eddie so protective over Catherine and he goes to extreme measures whether it means betraying his loved ones to stop the relationship between her and Rodolfo. Firstly Eddie tries to convince Catherine that she should not get too close with Rodolfo. By the stage directions Miller uses we see an evil side to Eddie as his eyes glare at Catherine and he tries to fake a smile. ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t you talk to him, Eddie? He blesses you, and you donââ¬â¢t talk to him hardlyâ⬠, Eddies eyes are described as enveloping and replies to Catherine ââ¬Å"I bless you and you donââ¬â¢t talk to meâ⬠which shows he is trying to make her feel guilty about her spontaneous interests in Rodolfo. He also tells Catherine that Rodolfo donââ¬â¢t respect her and that he doesnââ¬â¢t bless him, trying to persuade Catherine to stay away from him. When this does not change Catherineââ¬â¢s interests in Rodolfo, Eddie feels like he has been defeated and takes his p roblems to Alfieri. This is where Eddieââ¬â¢s downfall begun. Eddie was losing control of his emotions, making him become crazy. He approached Alfieri to report Rodolfo and stated that he was only after Catherine to get papers. Alfieri described Eddieââ¬â¢s eyes to be like tunnels showing that he was already feeling defeated and described his jealousy as a passion that was controlling his body. ââ¬Å"Eddie, Iââ¬â¢m a lawyer. I can only deal in whatââ¬â¢s provable. You understand that, donââ¬â¢t you? Can you prove that?â⬠asked by Alfieri. Eddie replied ââ¬Å"I know whatââ¬â¢s in his mind, Mr Alfieri!â⬠The italics show desperation as well as the exclamation mark showing that he is gradually losing his temper. Eddie also describes Rodolfo to Alfieri saying that ââ¬Å"you could kiss him he was so sweet.â⬠Eddie had revealed to Alfieri that he thought Rodolfo was homosexual using it as an excuse to convince Alfieri that he wants papers. You are kept reminded by Eddieââ¬â¢s death throughout the play by the use of foreshadowing and help from Alfieri narrating Eddieââ¬â¢s actions and the play. Alfieri said ââ¬Å"I knew where he was heading for, I knew where he was going to end.â⬠This reminds an audience of the opening scene where we knew from the start, Eddieââ¬â¢s ending. Also Alfieri includes a metaphor to warn Eddie of what he will face if his jealous ways get the better of him. ââ¬Å"A river will drown youâ⬠spoken by Alfieri indicating that it will become too much for him to handle and he wonââ¬â¢t be able to face the consequences he faces of breaking the law. Eddie has an impenetrable wall of denial and during the play if someone tried to shatter it, he would fill with fury. Anger is shown multiple times with the use of punctuation such as exclamation marks. When Alfieri says to him, ââ¬Å"She canââ¬â¢t marry you can she?â⬠Eddie infuriately responds, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know what the hell youââ¬â¢re talkinââ¬â¢ about!â⬠Also when Beatrice screams at him, ââ¬Å"You want somethinââ¬â¢ else, Eddie, and you can never have her!â⬠These words got Eddie so angry they could have been the words that lead to his death. This was probably Eddieââ¬â¢s biggest problem. He just couldnââ¬â¢t face the truths that made him lie resulting in his crashing downfall. I think the way Arthur Miller presents the character Eddie Carbone allows the audience to understand the message far easier. Eddie shows what can happen if you allow yourself to be too known. Really there are desires and secrets that are best to be kept to you in order for the protection of others that is. And this is explained in the ending when Alfieri said, ââ¬Å"most of the time we settle for half and I like it better.â⬠This means that you should compromise and allow justice, be fair and donââ¬â¢t be greedy. Also I think that the play teaches you about the psychology of relationships and that you shouldnââ¬â¢t betray your friends which Eddie did and look where he ended up. But there is a side to me that does feel sympathy for Eddie as it can become quite hard to release a daughter figure into the open world, especially when it comes as sudden as it did.

Effects of BackGround Music on Phonological Short-Term Memory Essay
Improving recall has been the goal of many scientific studies (Higbee, 2001; Lachman, Weaver, Bandura, Elliot, & Lewkowicz, 1992). As a result, a debate surfaced on the best method to achieve this goal. This study chose to focus on only two methods, emotional state and emotionally arousing words. Oneââ¬â¢s emotional state or mood is important to consider when exploring memory, because mood affects oneââ¬â¢s recall of information (Happiness-Levine & Burgess, 1997; Thaut & lââ¬â¢Etoile, 1993). Music, depending on the type, can help induce or change oneââ¬â¢s mood (Rickard, 2012). This is important because, music is apart of many of peopleââ¬â¢s daily lives. Students, especially, listen to music while they study a task that relies on oneââ¬â¢s memory. Beyond just exploring mood, this study wanted to look at what type of word is best remembered. Previous research (Doerksen & Shimamura, 2001; LaBar & Phelps, 1998; Zimmerman & Kelley, 2010) found that people tend to recal l and remember emotional words better than neutral non-emotional words. Explore the differences between working with individuals and working with groups in the community context
When looking at community work firstly one must try ad define what is meant when talking about the community. Community can have many different meaning and due to this can be very hard to find one answer to help us to understand the word community. According to the dictionary community is ââ¬Ëa group of people living in one place, the public in general' ( Collins pocket dictionary, Collins, 1982) although this offers a place to start it doesn't help us to understand community it's self. Both community and youth work both have totally different aims and have changed over the years. Youth work traditionally started as a form of informal education as a way of getting children involved with different activities although now it is becoming more and more formal. It started of as a collective idea where young people in the same social background could meet and the youth workers could work with them around these issues. Ultimately until very recently youth workers just helped the youth to over come their problems. Now in the modern society it is moving much more towards formal education where the youth workers take an active role on the administrating of the education of the youth. Working with individuals compared to groups of the community is totally different and throws up totally different problems. I'm going to look at the advantages of both first and then apply them to some common community issues to see which works best when put into perspective. Individual work usually involves working on a one to one basis with some one either simply talking about issues that worry them or offering help with a problem that they have. A huge advantage of working one to one is the fact that you can offer confidentiality to that person who has approached you. Due to this it enables the person the open up a lot more as they know that it isn't going to be over heard by any other person. Working on this basis also allows much more sensitive issues to be addressed, like the issues of the home background. By working one to one it enables you to get a lot more information out of the individual that maybe they are ashamed to address in public. By using this way of helping people you can form strong bonds between you and the person who you are helping and trust can be built up from here. Eventually becoming a friend of the person and being seen less as a helper but more of an equal, this type of relationship can also a big help when dealing with emotional problems. Since the worker becomes more of an equal rather than a helper it can be addressed in a more relaxed way and hopefully be more beneficial to the individual. Although individual work has many strengths it doesn't go without its weaknesses. By just having a one to one session the person does not have the social contact with they may need and attain by talking it though as a group. It also fails to let the individual know that they are not the only one with the problem that they have. By addressing it as a group the whole group can share their feeling on the issue but one a one to one basis the person becomes very self reliant on that issue and can some times fail to notice tat they aren't the only ones suffering form that problem. Community workers only a have small money pots. By offering one to one help for everyone with a problem would be stupid. Individual sessions take up more time than group work and therefore allow the money that would be spent on the workers hours to be spent on other things like a project for raising awareness of sexual health. One aim of community work is to gain a sense of belonging and togetherness within that chosen area. By address each problem on a one to one basis it defeats the problem. Surely by addressing the problem as a group it would bring about a sense of understanding. By working with just individual people there is always the problem with the fact that they could become attached to that person or even dependant on you, which ideally should not happen as they should be learning to trust their peer group not an outsider. Although it may not happen on a regular basis it is still a problem of one on one interview. Group work although at first many seem a good idea has its down falls as well. Originally used on mass by the uniformed organisations, it offers a way of getting to know each other in a relaxed environment. Using group worked in the community has big advantages. The Truth and Nature of Love in ‘Shakespeare in Love’

John Maddenââ¬â¢s Shakespeare in Love is a ââ¬Ëromantic comedyââ¬â¢ set in the class-dominated society of Elizabethan England. The two protagonists and ââ¬Å"Star-crossed loversâ⬠of the film come from completely different ends of the class spectrum. Will Shakespeare is a ââ¬Å"lowly playerâ⬠with writerââ¬â¢s block searching for his muse and wealthy Viola De Lesseps who dreams of ââ¬Å"love as there has never been in a playâ⬠are fortuneââ¬â¢s fools as the viewer must come to realise that love cannot conquer all.Madden conveys the division between Will and Viola through use of dialogue, mis-en-scene, camera shots and costuming. It is through these techniques that as a twenty-first century viewer I became able to understand the harshness of ââ¬Å"the truth and nature of loveâ⬠in sixteenth c entury England and began to appreciate more the risks Will and Viola took to defy these truths. The idea of the ââ¬Å"truth and nature of loveâ⬠in sixteenth century England defines marriage as a method of obtaining social or financial gain. This divides our unfortunate protagonists who are separated by their respective social standings.Maddens positions the viewer to see this separation through use of dialogue in Will and Violaââ¬â¢s conversations. Viola is quicker too see the consequences the two will face if she continues her romance with Will saying ââ¬Å"it is too flattering sweet too be substantial. â⬠Too good to be true. Will and Violaââ¬â¢s love is a brief exert from the realities of the time, a dream that can only last until Violaââ¬â¢s inevitable marriage to Lord Wessex. ââ¬Å"Master Will, poet dearest to my heart, I beseech you, banish me from yours- I am to marry Lord Wessex- a daughterââ¬â¢s duty. However Will and Viola continue to pursue their risky love coming to each other in disguise. Will gets caught up in the romance having finally found his muse and boasts to Viola ââ¬Å"For one kiss, I would defy a thousand Wessexes! â⬠As a twenty-first century teenager the concept of a class-system preventing two lovers from being together seemed foreign to me as although todayââ¬â¢s society is not perfect there is no hierarchy preventing young couples from being together. However I admired and appreciated the two protagonists for going against the aws of society and seeing each other in secret struggling to convince themselves that ââ¬Å"love knows nothing of rank or riverbank. â⬠Throughout the film the viewer is constantly reminded of the difference between Will and Violaââ¬â¢s respective positions in the hierarchy of the age and however strong it may be their love is not one that will last the expectations and realities of Elizabethan England. Madden engrains this into the viewer through mis-en-scene and ca mera shots. Violaââ¬â¢s stately home is an immediate indicator that she will serve as a foil to Will.Despite their shared passion for the arts almost everything else about Will and Viola differs. When the viewer is introduced to Will Shakespeare he does not live up to the expectations viewers of today have based on the playwright he will become. Will currently lives in what appears to be a run-down, dirty London boarding house. His room is compact and the walls stained and bare. It is void of furniture save a small writing desk, table and stool. His bed is in a small loft atop a ladder and we viewers are reminded, ââ¬Å"actors are two-a-pennyâ⬠a strange contrast to todayââ¬â¢s idolism of all those to grace the silver screen.Violaââ¬â¢s mansion completely differs to Willââ¬â¢s world, the sheer size of the grounds and the long driveway are symbols of her wealth. Violaââ¬â¢s bedroom is furnished with detailed tapestries, carved wooden furniture and a giant four-po ster bed all illuminated by a gentle golden glow heightening the sense of her regality. Violaââ¬â¢s world continues to contrast to Willââ¬â¢s as she has a place at court and therefore is invited to festivities at places such as Greenwich and Whitehall, vast palaces with luxuries such as theatres, audience chambers and ballrooms. Willââ¬â¢s entertainment is in the crowded, dark taverns with cheap food, drink and love.Madden also enhances the separation between the two lovers through use of camera shots and angles. As Viola is the social superior she is shown to be at a higher level than Will through use of low angle shots illustrating to the viewer how she is too above Will for their relationship to work. This is seen especially in the balcony scenes shared between Will and Viola in reality and as Romeo and Juliet in the opening performance of the play. She is always above him and this is reciprocated through high angle shots of Will as he is near the bottom of the Elizabeth an hierarchy.This shows that although it is in Will and Violaââ¬â¢s nature to fall in love the truths of the era separates them making it impossible for a highborn lady like Viola to ââ¬Å"love happily with a bankside poet and player. â⬠Shakespeare in Love won an academy award for its use of costuming in the film, which is apparent when we see Viola throughout the film. She is dressed immaculately in elaborate gowns with intricate beading often shown in regal colours such as red, silver and gold which highlights her wealth and status and reminds the viewer that she is too above Will for their relationship to be acceptable in Elizabethan society.This is contrasted when we first see Will, he is clearly one of the masses in his worn workman boots, plain white shirt and ink stained hands. He relies on his words for a living. Viola and Will are from separate worlds and are only equals in the opening performance of Romeo and Juliet where Will is dressed in equal amounts of finer y as Viola. This shows that only in the make-believe world of the theatre can these two be equal and accepted. The idea that they cannot marry each other even though they are in love is hard to grasp in the modern day and is the reason why many were unsatisfied by the ending of the film.However it was interesting to see how ââ¬Å"love can spring between a queen and the poor vagabond who plays the king. â⬠We see Will and Viola defy ââ¬Å"rank and riverbankâ⬠in an awe-inspiring way but we learn that despite their risk taking, there is not always a happy ending. So it can be seen that the truth of love in Elizabethan England separates the two protagonists who are without control over their own relationships and life choices, a reality for the time that is hardly seen in twenty-first century New Zealand making this theme in the film almost alien to a modern teenage girl like myself.John Madden successfully portrays the constrictions of Elizabethan England and the trials Wi ll and Viola must undergo to be together through his use of dialogue, mis-en-scene, camera shots and costuming. During times of war, or unstable situations in which the public safety is threatened, the government must responsibly decide how much they should decrease the civil liberties of the people in order to ensure safety without taking away too much rights from the people. Because the Constitution is such a flexible document, we can interpret it freely enough so that we can alter the documentââ¬â¢s meaning for times of war or peace and thus treat each situation with more unique, workable solutions. Posner points out the need for flexibility in the Constitution on page 1 of his narrative, ââ¬Å"Like any brittle thing, a Constitution that will not bend will breakâ⬠. Posnerââ¬â¢s message throughout his entire book is that we must interpret the Constitution loosely in order for our country to survive through any situation. The threat level that the United States government deals with effects the range of how far civil liberties from the Constitution should be allowed to vary; but, the specific amount at which they should vary is never concrete. In fact, the we are always trying to find a balance between these two points on the spectrum that best fits each new given situation When values such as personal liberty and privacy come into conflict with those of equal importance, like public safety, which have suddenly become magnified by the onset of a national emergency, then it is more important to sacrifice some of our personal liberty and privacy in exchange for the safety of the public during a time of crisis. When there is a time of crisis it is more important to protect the safety of the people than to get as much rights as usual and then have the lives of the people at greater risk. I personally agree with Posnerââ¬â¢s ideas on the balance between freedom and security, and I think that the sacrifice of rights to an extent is a good solution, as long as civil liberties never disintegrate. According to Posner, civil liberties in order to protect the people from a tyrant or oppression, and states that they are for making sure that there is no situation where ââ¬Å"such actions get out of hand, creating a climate of fear, oppressing the innocent, stifling independent thought, and endangering democracy.â⬠Protection from terrorisms is essential, and I am very thankful for many of the steps that the government has taken to give us security, and the price of a little less privacy is alright with me if it saves countless lives and keeps our nation safer.
